“There’s something very special about fashion. It’s a universal concept. The idea that we can place pieces of fabric on our back, creating an identity... is mind-boggling. Think about it. These clothes...stitched together creating a final silhouette...easily has a hand in our lives. Not only in creating our identity but helping us showcase it to the world. It’s a magical thing. We use fashion to tell a story that emotes feelings. It’s funny...just by putting together a look. Finding the dress, choosing the accessories, matching the perfect pair of shoes. We can create a narrative. Not one of words, but one of feelings.” -Woobenz F. Deriveau
The magic of a Colorless World.
Black and white images are so special. Our eyes aren't distracted by color. Our mind is free to consume the image in the purest way possible. Think about this: When you're driving down the street and you see a big muscle car, they seem pretty impressive. But the only way to appreciate them is to look under the hood. Without the engine it just looks good, it won't run. It's the same with images. A black and white image pulls back all the layers. It opens up the hood and shows you the "engine" of the photograph, its composition. You see, the composition is every detail that makes the image. The lighting, the spacing, the props, it's all composition. The term means "putting together". So it's the combination of all these elements that makes an image special. Seeing an image in black and white allows us to see the inner working and gears of or photograph. When creating these images it's important to remember, there is no right or wrong way to compose a photograph. It's like a recipe. There's structure, but you might cook our dish way different than the other guy. This doesn't mean one of you is wrong, it just means you have different perspectives. And if we as an industry keep telling people that there's only ONE WAY to do certain things, we may never get to see their beautiful art.
Fun thing about fashion photography is: The possibilities are endless. As children we played dress up. Make believe games where the whole world was compacted in our play rooms. As Artist the games can continue.
